Yoga for Beginners

This class is suitable for those who have no prior experience with yoga. New and old practitioners may join this class.

The class starts with a short discussion on a certain topic about yoga. It can be tidbits of information regarding the definition and history of yoga, yoga anatomy, and yoga philosophy.

It is then followed by a short relaxation period (or centering) to prepare the body for the practice of asana. Breathing and meditative techniques are introduced.

Asana (posture) practice starts with simple movements of every major joint in the body. As the practice progresses, so does the intensity of the asanas.

Surya Namaskar A (Sun Salutations) is introduced as a warm-up method. It is broken down into 9 different movements, each linked with the breath.

The main sequence consist of fundamental standing and seated asana. Each asana is discussed in detail (including its benefits and contraindications) and everyone is guided with the proper alignment. Variations are given when needed.

After the main sequence, the class is led into relaxation postures to soothe the muscles and into the final Savasana (the final resting pose).

What to bring for a yoga class:

  1. Hand towel
  2. Extra shirt
  3. Water bottle – It is best to hydrate before and after class
  4. Yoga mat  (optional) – For hygiene purposes, it is best to have your own mat. But if you don’t have one yet, we have mats in the studio that you can use.
  5. A large towel to lay over your mat (optional) – This is to minimize the risk of slipping on your mat during a really sweaty yoga session

Things to remember when entering any yoga studio:

1. Turn your phones to silent mode. Yoga is a time for silence, meditation, and mindful movements. Focusing on the task at hand is really important. Your phones can be a distraction to you and the people around you. Please consider placing your phones inside your bag during practice. Photos can be taken after class.

2. Leave your shoes by the door. Any yoga space is a sacred space and we strive to keep it clean and free from any dust or dirt. Please leave your footwear by the door before entering the studio. Don’t worry about getting your feet dirty.

3. Focus only on how you feel, not how you look. While correct alignment is of utmost importance, you need not jump into the full posture right away. If you are a beginner, your teacher may give variations to make the pose easier. Make sure that whatever posture you are in, you can breathe with ease and you are not in pain. Eventually, your body will open up and you will be able to go deeper into each posture.

4. Practice without setting your eyes on results. Approach your practice with sincere intentions of self-love, self-acceptance, and compassion towards others. Keep goals of weight loss or asana achievements at bay. Setting these kinds of goals will only frustrate you. Yoga is not a work-out. It is so much more than that. Yoga is a lifestyle. And if you practice without attachment to results, your practice will be much more peaceful and fulfilling.

5. Have fun! Smile. Don’t take it too seriously. It’s just yoga! 🙂
